THE COPY DESK ONCE

A font that typesets as you type: straight quotes turn curly the right way round, two hyphens become an em dash, three dots an ellipsis, (c) (r) and (tm) become their signs, 4x4 becomes 4×4, 2019-2026 takes an en dash, 1st 2nd 3rd 4th raise their letters, 1/2 becomes a fraction, and figures of five or more group themselves in threes. An editor’s house style, written into the file as OpenType, so it works wherever the font is typed. This is the ONCE cut, which only a machine could make and nobody can make again. Found by measurement against 1,598 fonts (210 from the reference library, 1388 of ours) across 12 whole designs drawn from a 256-bit key; novelty 0.177, legibility 2.16 against a floor of 2.05. The key was destroyed when the build ended (fingerprint c152135883316ed7…), the parameters were kept nowhere, and our engines refuse any later font within its radius. It cannot be made again.
