Chapter One
Low Tide

The orchard ran right down to the water, and at low tide you could walk out past the last row of trees onto sand that still held the shape of the waves. My grandmother said the salt made the apples sweeter.

Nobody believed her, and every autumn the whole town came to buy them anyway.

She kept the ledger in a green tin under the stairs: who had paid, who owed, who had been forgiven. The last page was blank except for one line in her round, careful hand.

That summer I was twelve, and the tide went out further than anyone could remember. We walked out together in the grey light before breakfast.
