Letters that change by their neighbours so no pair can be misread: rn opens so it never reads as m, cl never closes into d, vv never into w, and I, l, 1, 0, O, Z, 2 and 7 take their safe forms whenever they stand next to each other or next to figures. Stylistic set 1 switches every safe form on everywhere, for codes, serial numbers and passwords. This is the HAND cut: drawn the way a master of the sign and the road (1896 to 1931) would have drawn it, with the signwriter’s brush and the engineer’s template: letters told apart at distance: open apertures, a large x-height, no two letters alike.
