In a small workshop at the end of a gravel road, three people make about forty chairs a year. Each one takes a week. The waiting list is two years long, and nobody seems to mind.
Across the country, the same story repeats in bakeries, letterpress studios and pottery sheds. People want to know who made the thing, and how.

The makers we met share one habit: they slow down on purpose. A chair is finished when it is right, not when the week is over. It shows in the joints, in the finish and in the way a seat meets your back.
It is a good time, they say, to be patient.
The orchard ran right down to the water, and at low tide you could walk out past the last row of trees onto sand that still held the shape of the waves. My grandmother said the salt made the apples sweeter. Nobody believed her, and every autumn the whole town came to buy them anyway.
3She kept the ledger in a green tin under the stairs: who had paid, who owed, who had been forgiven. The last page was blank except for one line in her round, careful hand, and it took me eleven years to understand it.
That summer I was twelve, and the tide went out further than anyone could remember. We walked out together in the grey light before breakfast, and she stopped where the sand turned dark and pointed at something half buried, glinting.
